What to visit?

1. PLAZA PORTICADA: Historical square of the municipality of Berja; it is the unique enclave where the Hotel Don Miguel Plaza is located. It was built in 1860 and later restored in 2011, it is the epicentre of life in Berja and is home to two important tourist attractions: the fountains of Macho and Hembra and the Calle del Arco.

2. PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN: This recently reconstructed square houses the Town Hall and the Church of the Annunciation.

3. MOLINO DEL PERRILLO: A key point for tourism in the town, it has an amazing museum where you can see the recreation of a typical 19th century palatial house in Berja. It also houses a flour mill together with the municipal tourist office and the library.

4. VILLAVIEJA: The archaeological site of Villavieja is a sample of the extensive history and culture of Berja, where we can find a Roman amphitheatre and a medieval walled city.

5. TORRE DE LOS ENCISO: 16th century tower-fortress reflecting Moorish history and Christian repopulation.

6. CASTALA: It is a periurban park located at the foot of the Sierra de Gádor, has a wide network of trails where nature is intermingled with native species and mining archaeology from the industrial era with lead and fluorite extractions. It also has a picnic area and recreational areas.

7. PASEO CERVANTES: A wide promenade covered by large trees that give it a majestic touch, as well as shade in the hot season.

8. FOUNTAINS: Berja has more than 30 fountains in its streets and squares. All of them have a unique and interesting history.

Holidays and important dates

Holy Week

One of the most important celebrations of the municipality is its Holy Week, during this week different processions take place every day (except Monday and Saturday) through the main streets and the passion of the citizens in this festivity can be felt in every corner of Berja.

Berja Fair (festivals)

The first week of August is the Feria de Berja, from Wednesday to Sunday, the days of celebration and enjoyment par excellence for the virgitanos and virgitanas. At midday you can enjoy the ‘feria del mediodía’ which is held in the Plaza Porticada, where the Hotel is located; different bars of the village set up their bars, while there are concerts and a good atmosphere. In the evening it is time to enjoy the attractions and stalls that are distributed along the Avenida Manuel Salmerón, following this street we find the municipal booths and the ‘casetas de ambiente’ that keep the party going until the early hours of the morning.

Before the Fair, the cultural festivals are held in the Plaza Porticada itself, with different activities: concerts, dances… You can also enjoy great concerts in the Plaza de Toros (with well-known artists such as Pablo López, Omar Montes, Niña Pastori…).

The Virgin of Gádor

The Virgen de Gádor is the patron saint of Berja, being her feast day the 8th of September, the town of Gádor honours her during 3 Sundays with a procession (going up and down from the hermitage). Around this date other cultural and gastronomic events are held in the Plaza de la Constitución.

Expo Berja-Alpujarra

Trade fair where different and interesting businesses and associations from Berja and the Alpujarra converge, such as food, fashion, motor, jewellery, housing, beauty, art, leisure, toys…

Carnival

Carnival is also a special time in Berja, where the town enjoys a special festival with different activities, competitions, concerts… for all ages.

Sporting activities

The International Cycle Tour ‘La Indomable’ in the Sierras de la Alpujarra with thousands of cycling enthusiasts from different countries.

In addition, the Subida de Montaña “Ciudad de Berja”, a motor racing championship which has as its meeting point the Plaza Porticada where the Hotel Don Miguel Plaza is located.
